The Errant Scribbler: METAPHOR, FORM, AND CONTENT

"Metaphor, symbol, allegory, image - none of these is possible without the world, that is, without forms. In poetry, the first form necessary for the existence of these tropes and figures, even before the literal sense can be conveyed, is obviously language itself. In contrast to his famous and oft-quoted poetic dictum of "no ideas but in things", William Carlos Williams once said that "writing is made of words, of nothing else," claiming the primacy of verbal art as poetry's prima materia..."
